Thursday, a 9-year-old was found dead by his mother in an apparent suicide in Denver, Colorado.
The boy’s mother Leia Pierce says bullying is a factor in what led to her son, Jamel Myles, death after he recently came out as gay.
Pierce told reporters her son wanted to come out to his classmates because he was proud of his identity.
Pierce also said that when her son came out, he opened up about wanting to dress more femininely.
Jamel began school last Monday as a fourth grader at Joe Shoemaker Elementary School, four days later he was found dead.
An autopsy from the Denver medical examiner’s office later confirmed the boy’s death as a suicide.
Pierce is reportedly speaking out about the tragedy to bring awareness to effects of bullying.
