Rich Stevens Matzoh Farfel Side Dish

Rich Stevens ShowThis is the recipe I talked about on the show…

Remember DO NOT BUY Matzoh farfel, it is a scam… Make it yourself with the instructions below…

Here’s what you will need…

  • 5 pieces of matzoh
  • 2 eggs, just beat them a little
  • 3 Tablespoons sunflower oil
  • 1 can low sodium chicken soup broth
  • 1 large yellow onion
  • 1 Large Ziplock bag
  • Couple pinches of Kosher salt
  • Couple pinches of fresh black pepper
  • Large deep frying pan
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Good appetite!

Here’s how to make it…

Step one… cut up the onion… then set it aside…

Step two… take the five matzoh and put inside the ziplock bag and simply break them up into smaller “farfel” size pieces…

When they are all broken up put them into a large bowl.

Next step is to pour water over the matzoh just to dampen, be sure to cover the matzoh with the water… let it soak for about two minutes and then drain all the water out of the bowl…

Next step take the two beaten eggs and pour it over the matzoh and mix it up… Its ok if the pieces of matzoh get smaller when you do this…Just don’t make them to much smaller… Let the mixture sit for a few minutes…
(I know so far looks like you are making a matzoh brie, don’t be tempted)

Now heat a large skillet, make sure its deep too… with a few tablespoons of sunflower oil… (this oil is actually good for you)
When the oil is hot put in just the onions and brown them… add the fresh ground pepper before they are browned…

Next step after the onions have been browned make a circle in the middle of the pan by pushing the onions to the side and pour in that middle a little bit more of the sunflower oil…

As soon as that oil is hot, add the matzoh/egg mixture and cook until it gets slightly browned…

Next step add the entire can of the chicken broth… Now it’s important to watch it and stir it every few minutes…

Now is a good time to add the little bit of salt…

It will take about 10 minutes at medium high heat before all the soup gets absorbed into the matzoh…

As soon as you see it’s all absorbed take it off the heat and serve hot!

You can thank me later… Enjoy!

  3. My Grandparents were the founders of Ratner’s Dairy Restaurant in New York City. I was brought up eating the best food and Passover was very special for us. Our Seder dinner was very special with every member of a very large family getting together for the first and second night. Very fond memories. I worked for the CBS Television Network for over 33 years and am now retired and living in Florida. I catch you on the radio often and enjoy you. Thanks for sharing.. Stay well and prosper and a Zeesen Pesach..
