The Houston, Texas school district says that they have disciplined several teachers at one of their schools, after a 13-year-old girl received an award naming her “most likely to become a terrorist.”
The Channelview Independent School District said the fake award given to several students earlier this week, was meant to be lighthearted, however, the girl’s mother Ena Hernandez, said the certificate was particularly upsetting due to the recent events that occurred in Manchester, England and in several parts of the world.
Channelview spokesman Mark Kramer told reporters that certificates were a “poor attempt to poke fun.” The school District has since issued a statement apologizing for the “insensitive and offensive fake mock awards.”
The punishment the teachers at the school received for their actions was not disclosed.
