The first gold record I was presented…

I remember it like it was yesterday, the receptionist calls me upfront to pick up a package, I was surprised because I wasn’t expecting anything, and when I opened the package it was my first Gold Record Award!
My station was one of the first in the country to play the new Whitney Houston song. The way that came about, I was visiting my friends at Arista Records in NYC and Rick Bisceglia who was the head of promotion for Arista says, Rich come with me, and we walked up this narrow spiral staircase into an office and sitting there was Clive Davis, they wanted to play this new artist for me… I was literally one of the first radio people to hear this new artist, named Whitney Houston…

Whitney Houston Gold Record Award to Rich Stevens

It has even more meaning now… as does being invited to so many of Clive’s Grammy Parties in Beverly Hills, here’s a picture at the last one I went to… I think I was one of three guys who weren’t wearing a tux, (that’s another story)…

Now, I have to find the pictures of me with Whitney, I interviewed her one year right after the Grammy’s in New York in a room at The New York Hilton… and then another time at the Meadowlands!

  1. Congrats on the Gold Record. That is something to be proud of. But knowing you as I do, I bet the proudest moment in the whole thing was when you actually got to MEET her. Even if but for a few moments,.
